Home Remedies for Ingrown Hair: Right in Your Kitchen

Ingrown hairs cause ugly and painful little bumps on your skin. Sure, you can stop shaving, waxing, tweezing, or otherwise getting rid of unwanted hair, but who wants to do that? Instead, check out your kitchen for some easy-to use and easy-to-make edible treats for your skin.

Home remedy #1: Preventing ingrown hairs

You can prevent ingrown hairs in the first place by exfoliating your skin before shaving and every time you shower. You can use a loofah or sponge, but if you have delicate skin the abrasion can hurt your skin. Body scrubs are available at online stores, drug stores and department stores in every price range. The only problem is that the less expensive scrubs tend to use abrasive ingredients. Whipping up an all-natural and mild scrub is a home remedy to prevent ingrown hairs and it only takes only a few minutes. Hairchick’s favourite recipe includes baking soda. Just mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a tablespoon of liquid soap. Use your hands to spread this mixture over your body and then rinse off. You can also make a body scrub by mixing sugar with equal parts liquid soap.

Home remedy #2: Preventing ingrown hairs after shaving

After shaving, try using witch hazel (available at any health food store and some drug stores for a few dollars) to the skin. Applying an antiseptic can also help offset ingrown hairs by cleaning the area. Hairchick has a friend who crushes two aspirin in water and applies to the skin just after shaving. She swears this helps prevent ingrown hairs for her.

Home remedy #3: Getting rid of itchiness caused by ingrown hairs

If it’s too late and you already have ingrown hairs, you can reduce any itchiness you have by pureeing half a cucumber and adding 1/3 cup of milk. Mix the mixture and store (covered) in the fridge for a few minutes until cold. Soak gauze or a cloth in the mixture and apply for a few minutes to the irritated areas, then rinse off. This will not make the ingrown hairs go away, but it will take away the itchiness and irritation for a few minutes.

Home remedy #4: Facial ingrown hairs

If the ingrown hair is on your face, you can wait a day or two and then look at the hair in direct sunlight with the help of a magnifying mirror. If you notice a bit of hair sticking out, it is possible to remove the hair by plucking it out. You will need to clean the area scrupulously before and after tweezing. Tweezing will hurt far more than it usually does, so don’t bother if you have more than one ingrown hair on your face. Don’t even think of trying to yank ingrown hairs on other parts of your body – you’ll have a very hard time trying to see the hair properly. Hairchick suggests that you leave the hair alone if at all possible, and only resort to pulling it in case of a dire emergency – like an important event. Pulling at an ingrown hair can cause an infection and may lead to scarring, so it is not a technique to be taken lightly.

Professional Alternative

The best product I have ever used, without a doubt, is Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment & Prevention System. It really helped to release the trapped ingrown hairs within a few days of using the product. The best way to treat them is to follow the advice on the bottle, keep the area clean and the situation should clear up quite quickly.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure!

Waxing is the best method of removing hair from your underarms and pubic area. I use an epilator as it helps me get rid of very fine hair, as in case of waxing one has to wait till the hair reaches a certain length. But for first timers I suggest waxing and then switch to epilator if it suits you.
As for the darker areas. Here is a pack that my mother taught me and has worked very well for me.
A pinch of turmeric ( Just a pinch. We wouldn’t want you to turn yellow! ) mixed with milk powder, and a little water for a creamy consistency. apply all over right before you shower. Wait till it dries . Grease your palm with little coconut oil or olive oil and then in light rotating movements of your palm scrub the pack off. Then shower as usual. You can also apply this soft scrub to your face. It bring a wonderful shine.
Stick to a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and nuts and you are going to be the prettiest bride ever.
      All the best.

Forgot to add. Try to apply this pack as often as possible. It is not a one time solution but an ongoing process. This removes the dead skin and exposes healthy glowing skin.

i waxed abt sum time ago and recently I’ve gotten really bad ingrowns in my private area which i never get with shaving! do u know what might of caused it? because i’d done it myself so i thought i’d improperly waxed.
        plz help

        • bk82deb says:

I don’t know the exact reason for ingrown hair, but here is what I think might be. Shaving leads to coarser hair that can easily penetrate the skin when growing. Waxing on the other hand leads to finer hair that grows back into the surface for some individuals. I am unaware of any products that can/cure remove ingrown hairs. I push them out. Using the tip of two fingers I press the skin around the ingrown to push it out ( Like picking a pimple to remove the pus ). Works for me. Just be careful.
To prevent ingrowns keep a loofah handy when you shower (I am not too fond of the plastic loofahs). Scrub your skin while you shower (not harshly – Just be regular). Also clean yourself with warm water before and after you wax.
Hope this helps. All the best.

You should probably invest in a good epilator. I personally find it impossible to wax the pubic area on my own and think that an epilator does a pretty good job as long as one is using it according to the directions.

What does this “pack” do? What is it good for???
I suffer from pcos and a lot of excess hair especially facial. With that comes alot of ingrown
hairs and swollen areas where the hair
        is pulled out.

        Thanks

I have had a ingrown hair on my neck for about a week and a half now, and havent had a hair stick out yet..I have try to pop it and drain it so I can release the pain it is causing.. It is really sore and swelling even more daily..What can I do? Can I try to poke it with a needle or something? I have no insurance and need a home remedy…Thanks

    • bk82deb says:

Please do not try to remove the ingrowns on your own. Go to a salon and ask somebody who is experienced in removing ingrowns using threading as a method. Use a good scrub to clean your skin on a regular basis.
If you can then use threading or waxing to remove hair from your neck and follow it with the application of this cream. It has good reviews. You can find it on Amazon.

  4. vanessa says:

hi my name is vanessa, im 19 and i have a lot of in grown hairs, mainly on my private part and bikini area. and i know its from shaving, when its time to shave my private part, tht same night i get razor bumps, and some turn into ingrowns others leave a mark i just dont know what to do anymore, some arent even ingrowns anmore just a really dark mark like i said before, and my skin tone is caramel like, so this doesnt look good, im deffenatley a pro at plucking them out, i mean i dont know if im doing it the wrong way but i pluck them out the way tht the hair around it is growing, i’ve also done the popping but i perfer the plucking because its easier and it honestly doesnt hurt me any more, but i just dont noe what to do to get rid of the marks, there all over my private part and im very ashmed to wear my bikini with out someone looking at me and thinking i have some type of std please help me!!!!!!!

    • niesha says:

i have somewhat the same problem my doc says its folliculitis and that i should use scissors instead of shaving.

    • N.K says:

Vanessa & Niesha, I know exactly how the two of you feel. I am a 22 yo Black Woman, with super tightly coiled hair, and very sensitive skin (to give you an idea, my eyelashes often curl back unto my eyelids, but that’s another issue altogether), so using an abrasive scrub for my ingrown hairs doesn’t work, firstly because my skin becomes even more inflamed, and secondly because the hairs curl so far deeply into my skin that it doesn’t make a difference.

I tried many products that were suggested on the internet, including lotions, Tea Tree oil, Scrubs, etc. and found that only two products worked well enough for me.

One’s called Ingrow Go. It contains salicylic acid, glycerin, isopropyl alcohol and I think two other ingredients. First thing you should know about this is that it BURNS when put on. The second thing is that at £10 for 150ml, it’s very expensive, and I’m sure this mixture could easily be made at home (I came across a recipe for TendSkin online which is very similar, composition wise)
I would say that you should start using it as soon as you remove hair, as opposed to when you start seeing ingrowns, as prevention is better than cure. It is also amazing for removing hyperpigmentation (the brown spots you spoke about) because it has a peeling action with the skin.
As a third bonus, when used on the underarms, you find that there’s no need for deodorant, as it kills the smell-causing bacteria VERY effectively.

Another product I found works quite well is something called Benzoyl Peroxide, which is used to treat acne, by removing bacteria, and peeling the skin. This is more cost effective and more readily available in supermarkets/pharmacies. 2.5% is enough to use, although you should use it each night, about 1 week prior to waxing.
Negative point of this is that it dries out your skin, and you have to be careful about contact with some dyed fabrics. (I learned this the hard way with the armpits of my favourite top). I would recommend that this be put on at night.

Another option, which I’ve resigned myself to, is just trimming as opposed to shaving or waxing, so using an electric shaver would be ideal, because they’re designed for the blades not to shave as close.

I hope you have found this information useful, and if you want any info, do not hesitate to reply.

      N.K

I noticed that this was posted ages, but I’m hoping that you well see this message!!

Im a black girl and I dont wax or shave. What I do use is the cream, but it dosent help. The day after I always get ingrown hairs and the thing is, they dont go away. I have a few previous ingrown hair (looks like dark brown bumps) that just dont want to go away. Sorry to ask this, but is this the same with you?? Now the sound of the TendSkin and Ingrow Go sound good!! But since you have used both of them, do you know if they work on previous ingrown hairs??
        Thanks :-)

  8. HelpMe! says:

So, I am 22, and I have had a problem with ingrown hairs since I was about 13. My parents would freak out if they knew that I were going to a gyno – so, I have just kind of been stuck. (I don’t have a close relationship with my parents, and they believe going to the gyno is a necessity; and, if I am not sexually active, there isn’t a reason for me to go. They fully support me, so I cannot really contest.)

Anyway, my boyfriend and I are extremely close, and we plan to get married within the next few years. I am looking to get more intimate with him, but the bumps and ingrown hairs on my private areas are preventing me from advancing. I have a caramel complexion and the irritation on my private areas is causing black marks. Also, sometimes the hairs are under the skin, and a hard bump just seems to develop. And, for some reason, I have multiple hairs growing out of one of one area. It also does this to my face. I am really worried. I have a very low tolerance to pain, so I cannot wax. And, I really want to clear this area up t And, I need an immediate fix.

So, if anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. Please. My getting intimate with him while not having been with anyone else could make or break my relationship. And, I will try whatever possible to try and fix this problem.

    • Crystal says:

I have EXACTLY the same problem except for the fact that I’m too shy to see a gyno. After years of putting up with this it just seems to be getting more and more unsightly and I don’t know what to do anymore

ok ladies going to the gynecologist is a necessity whether you are sexually active or not. getting regular screenings can prevent many different types of cancers or other health issues. theres no reason to be shy either they are just doctors doing their job and they are professionals. remember you are not the first theyve seen and wont be the last. i found it more comfortable seeing a female doctor rather than a male if thats of any help. be safe and take care of yourselves.

  10. Desperate, Sick and Tired!!! says:

I have a really unusual problem, I have started to grow like ingrown hairs on my thighs. I break out consistently with the little to big bumps and they cover my thighs. I never used to have a problem with ingrown hairs and I have NO idea what caused it. It has progressively gotten worse were i can not wear any shorts, skirts, dressed or bathing suits (unless they come down to my knee). It is summer and I would like to be able to wear any kind of shorts/dresses or go swimming with out having to wear bermuda short over my bathing suit. I do not have insurance and am completely stumped on what to do. I am very ashamed and embarrassed and worried of how much worse it will get. It will happen if I shave regularly or I have even tried going long time in between shaving to see if it would stop. It makes NO difference!!!! The continue to break out regardless. I am so desperate and open for any and all suggestions, PLEASE!!!!

Thank you so much for any help you provide in helping me cure or at least manage this and also helping me gain my CONFIDENCE back.

Guaranteed to work since I use this right now. And I’ve had your problem since puberty. I’m 27 now.
Go to this site. Order the Alpha Hydrox body wash in any scent. The 4% Glycolic-AHA will get rid of those bumps by exfoliating them away with the AHA in it. Everything by Alpha Hydrox is gentle and you might find them in some store but I order directly from them. You have to use it all the time because when I stopped the bumps came back. They are caused by dead skin cells building up.

    Hello,

I’ve found some help to ingrown hairs in the neck and jaw areas from talcum powder.

I put some twice daily, and found it to help dry out the wound caused by the ingrown hair, and let it heal better.

[And no, the claim that talcum powder causes cancer is really uncredible]

  15. Dawn says:

just to back some things up that have been said….

i used IngrowGo years ago – i can’t get it where i live anymore – but i remember thinking it was a miracle so if u can get hold of it where u are – get it! also everyone seems to think if u wax ur probs will go away when in fact ingrown hair probs are worse if u wax because the skin has time to close over the follicle before the hair grows level to the surface again. i was told waxing was better and waxed from 13 to 29years old before i gave up and started shaving!

  16. question...? says:

Hi, im male and just shaved my pubic hair for the first time,
ive got red marks which i think are ingrown hairs,
    what shall i do?
Im not planning to shave again soon so what will happen if i leave them?

Grateful if you could give me some answers

    • Assaf says:

I would try talcum powder, twice or more if you like, for a few days, and some patience. The hairs would need to resolve themselves.

There are other common treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide(in water based gel form preferably) and antibiotic creams, and mixtures of aspirin and alcohol, and if you go to a doctor, creams with topical steroids and other substances.

Talc seems to me the best option.

    • Assaf says:

I guess, they might not be ingrown hairs.

They might just be irritation from shaving. In that case talc or some good moisturizer would help.

You will probably know in a few days if they are ingrown hairs from the look and feel of the marks.

laser isn’t really the most cost effective treatment for hair removal. apparently it takes 6-8 treatments and a round about figure for just legs is AUS$900. if i were to get laser id quite literally need my whole body which would put me out at least $12000!
